Garage Door Repair

Garage Door Cable Repair

Lift cables work with the springs to raise the door evenly. When a cable frays, slips off its drum or snaps, the door hangs crooked and can jam in the tracks. We replace cables, re-seat the drums and get the door level again.

Signs you need cable repair

  • Door hangs lower on one side
  • A cable is loose, slack or off its drum
  • Frayed or rusty strands at the bottom bracket
  • Door jerks or twists as it moves
  • Door slammed shut on its own

What we do

  1. Secure the door so it can't drop
  2. Replace both cables with the correct length and gauge
  3. Re-seat and align the drums on the shaft
  4. Check bottom brackets for rust and damage
  5. Balance the door and test travel

Good to know

Cables usually fail at the bottom bracket, where road salt and water collect. Along the shoreline and on the Cape, salt air speeds that up, so we check the brackets on every cable job.

A slipped cable is often a symptom, not the cause: a worn spring or a bent track can throw the cable off. We fix the cause too.

How it works

Where this part sits on your door

Ten parts do all the work. Tap a number to see what each one does, how it fails, and how we fix it — or let the tour run.

PART 01

Torsion spring

What it does
Counterbalances the door's weight so it lifts with little force.
How it fails
Snaps with a loud bang after ~10,000 cycles; the door won't lift.

FAQ

Cable Repair questions

Is a broken garage door cable dangerous?

It can be. The cable is under spring tension, and a door with one cable can fall or twist. Keep clear and don't run the opener.

Do you replace both cables?

Yes. Cables wear together, and matching new cables keeps the door lifting evenly.

How long does a cable repair take?

Usually under an hour once we're on site, including balancing and testing the door.
